Helen May Adams

February 7, 1927 - May 14, 2015

Mrs. Helen May (Rogers) Adams, 88, of Corning, AR., went to be with the Lord, Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Arden Courts Memory Care Home in Geneva, IL., where she had lived for the past 2 years. Mrs. Adams was born February 7, 1927 to Charles Fred Rogers and Sarah Ruth (Dudley) Rogers. She was born and raised in Corning, AR., attended Corning schools and graduated Corning High School in 1945. She loved her community and home town of Corning. She was active in the First Baptist Church of Corning until her later years. Helen had the gifts of compassion and caring and frequently was found helping those in need in her neighborhood. She could often be found doing yard work or running errands for her elderly neighbors and family members. She would bake dozens of cookies at Christmas and take to the shut-in’s and elderly. She loved working in her yard and gardening. She also loved Jesus and a frequent comment she would make to people, even during her years with dementia, was “Jesus loves you.” She was a devoted daughter to both her parents, Fred and Ruth, and spent much time caring for them and her Aunt Maude Dudley and an elderly neighbor during their later years.

In her early years following high school graduation, Helen worked as a book keeper for the Corning Angle Service Station. Her father Fred also worked there so as his baby girl she was always under his loving watchful eye. It was while working there that she met Avon T. Adams when he kept coming in to look at a part for his vehicle. In the end he bought the part and worked up the courage to ask her out and the rest is history. She also worked as a book keeper for other Corning businesses, a teacher’s aide at the Corning Elementary School and at the Arkansas Welcome Center at the state line and for the Corning Chamber of Commerce. Her most important job was as wife and mother and grandmother.

Helen married Avon T. Adams on August 2, 1950. They spent their early married years in Jonesboro, AR., when Avon attended ASU, and Walnut Ridge and Hoxie where Avon first taught, before making their home in Corning. They were married for 32 years until he preceded her in death in October 1982. She became the mother of Linda and four years later, Janet. She would let it be known to anyone who would listen that her daughters and later her grandchildren were the joy of her life.

Helen is survived by her daughters Dr. Linda Adams Neal of North Little Rock, AR., Janet Adams Bellefontaine of South Elgin, IL.; her granddaughter Laura Cannady Hequembourg and husband Kelly Hequembourg of Columbia, MO.; her grandson Eric Kendall Bellefontaine of Dekalb, IL.; her brother Richard Rogers and wife Vida Mae Rogers of Saint Charles, MO.; her sister in law Winnie Rogers of Corning AR., and sister in laws Dixie Adams Bour of Little Rock, AR., Patty Adams Martin and Bill Martin of Opelika, AL., Audrey Simpson Adams of Huntsville, AL., and Sarah Adams of Independence, MO.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Fred Rogers and Sarah Ruth (Dudley) Rogers, her husband Avon T. Adams and her brother Wayne Rogers. They are rejoicing in heaven together today with their heavenly Father.

A celebration of her life and funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the services in the Corning Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until the time of services.
