Joan M. Brackett

February 13, 1937 - March 13, 2017

Joan M. Brackett, 80, of North Aurora, passed away March 13, 2017 at University of Chicago Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born February 13, 1937, in Aurora, the daughter of Wilfred and Alice (Ingraham) Lantz. She was united in marriage to Richard Brackett May 3, 1955, in Aurora, IL.

Joan attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Elementary School, and later attended and graduated from East Aurora High School. Just before her high school graduation, she married Richard. She liked to say she graduated from high school with her Mrs. Degree. Following high school, she moved to California to join her husband who was serving in the Marine Corp. It was there on Camp Pendelton that they had their first child, Michele. Two years later they added their son Michael to their family. Joan devoted her life to supporting and loving her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, of whom she was very proud. Joan had a strong faith in Christ since her early childhood and was an active member in the Lutheran Church, singing in the choir for years. She served on the North Aurora Fire Department Ladies’ Auxilliary and for two decades, she listened to the fire radio with Richard, for the tones to call, then helped him quickly out the door to fire calls. Joan had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and caring for her yard. In later years she enjoyed motorhoming with Richard and their beloved dog Rusty, spending winters in Texas and Florida.

Joan is survived by her husband Richard Brackett, two children: Michele (Tom) Andrews and Michael (Kim) Brackett of North Aurora, eight grandchildren: Tyler (Ryan) Andrews of Oswego, Tanner Andrews of North Carolina, Allison (Aaron) Smith, Ashton (Lynne) Brackett, Austin (Lee Ann) Brackett, and Becca, Joe and Abbie Brackett, all of North Aurora, two great-grandchildren: Lincoln Smith and Levi Brackett of North Aurora and her sister, Lois Hanson of Tucson, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant great-grandson, Samuel Smith.

  • Scott and Julie Greenawalt Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time. It is such a loss and she will be greatly missed. She and mom were very close cousins and as such our families were fairly close, especially during the early years when kids were young. She was a great mom, a great cousin, and a wonderful role-model. She leaves behind a wonderful legacy and great memories. She will be missed.
