Daniel James Mahon

December 5, 1953 - March 28, 2018

Daniel J. Mahon, 64, of Elgin, passed away in his home on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. He was born on December 5, 1953 to Hillard Mahon and Betty Jane (Miller) Mathis. He was united in marriage to Diana Howard on August 12, 1979, in Bartlett, Illinois.

Dan was born in Chicago and grew up in Franklin Park Illinois where he graduated from East Leyden High School. Dan went to the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana for 2 years, then transferred to Western Michigan University.  He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelors degree in Aviation. After graduation, he worked at Nielsens restaurant in Elmwood Park. There he met his wife Diana, and they were married on August 12, 1979. Dan worked for a short while at Chicago Executive Airport and then for Insurance Company of North America as an aviation insurance underwriter until 1980. In 1980 he helped his family to start their own successful business, Quality Dairy Distributors. He would go on to become president of this company, to which he would dedicate the rest of his life. 

Dan was a caring and devoted husband to Diana. He was a loving father to Dan Jr., Melissa and Nicole. A special Papa to Connor, Cameron, Dylan, Lyla, and Kennedy. Dan is also survived by his mother, Patricia Mathis, and his younger brother, Thomas Mahon. 

Dan had a wonderful sense of humor. His love for family camping trips, fishing, music and fast cars gave him great pleasures in his life. Dan always had a special place in his heart for all animals, especially his own, leaving behind his beloved dog Sadie. 

Dan you are forever in our hearts.

Daniel is survived by his wife Diana, and their three children: Daniel Jr., Melissa (Avinash) Khiani, and Nicole (Ryan) Brush; his five grandchildren: Connor, Cameron, Dylan, Lyla, Kennedy; his mother: Betty Jane (Miller) Mathis; and his brother: Thomas (Linda) Mahon.

He is preceded in death by his step father: Fredrick Mathis.

Visitation in Daniel’s name will be held from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S 3rd Street, St. Charles, IL 60174. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home, following visitation.
