Paul W. Bergeson

September 20, 1927 - December 10, 2018

Paul W. Bergeson, 91, of Batavia passed away Monday, December 10, 2018, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, IL.  Paul was born September 20, 1927, in Batavia, IL the son of Paul and Hazel (Klingberg) Bergeson.  He was united in marriage to Ethyl Johnson August 21, 1948 in Batavia, IL. 

A lifelong resident of the Fox Valley and a graduate of Batavia High School class of 1945.  Paul continued his college education at Illinois State University.  He was an enduring learner and a proficient teacher, coach, administrator, Christian, father and friend.  Paul started his teaching career in 1950, at St. Charles High School.  He was the Economics and Government teacher, later to become the Athletic Director and head coach for track and field and cross country.  Paul has been honored by the school to have a regional track meet named as the Paul Bergeson Invitational, he has been inducted into the Illinois Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, and the St. Charles East High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  He retired from St. Charles High school in 1988 following 38 years of service.  Paul loved every day spent at the school. 

Outdoors was a way of life for Paul.  Growing up on the Fox River in Batavia Paul was nicknamed Peeler a name given for his passion of fishing and the use of crawfish which he would peel and use as bait.  Throughout life Paul kept to his roots of the outdoors, he loved to fish, camp, hike, but most of all bird watching.  He was member of the National Audubon Society.  The family asks that you spend time with your family and take a walk in the woods with your loved ones, and make a toast to friendships, family and community. 

He is survived by his loving wife Ethyl, four children Bill (Carli) Bergeson, David (Brenda) Bergeson, Carol (Al) Yunkes, and Susan Bergeson; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Barbara Schoo, and two brothers Richard and Raymond Bergeson.  

Visitation will be held 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 South Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 14, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 South Lincoln Street Batavia, IL.  He will lie in state at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.  Rev. Steven Srock will officiate.  Interment will be held in West Batavia Cemetery.

  • Todd Koeppl Every year, when Donna Stockman had her cookie exchange, us men folk would gather for our annual "He-Man Woman Haters Club" breakfast. It started at Vi's, and after it closed, moved around a bit until we landed at Mother's the last few years. Paul was always there, always with a smile, big hello and stout handshake. I am honored to have known him and shared time with him. The entire Koeppl clan shares in the sorrow this news brings. Our prayers are with all of you.
