Michael W. Schlaeger

October 23, 1947 - March 5, 2019

Michael W. Schlaeger, 71, passed away on Tuesday March 5, 2019 in Orlando, FL at the Orlando VA Medical Center.  He was born in Oak Park, IL to Henry and Marilyn (nee Nolan) Schlaeger on October 23, 1947. Michael graduated from West Chicago High School in 1967 and joined the Navy right after graduation. Michael married the love of his life Cheryl Ann (nee Kraus) Schlaeger on December 19, 1967 in West Chicago. Michael and Cheryl lived throughout the Fox River Valley, finally settling in North Aurora in 1996.

Michael had training at Great Lakes Naval Station followed by training to be a Seabee in Rhode Island before being deployed to Vietnam in 1968. During his second tour of Vietnam he was involved in a jeep accident during October of 1969, before being honorable discharged from the Navy in October 1970.

Michael was very active in the Disabled American Veterans Group and Boy Scouts. He rose to leadership roles in both groups including leading Boy Scout Troop 91, a unit for disabled boys in Two River Council. Michael’s service to disabled children was recognized and he received a citation from the State of Illinois as well as the Friendship Facilities’ Phoenix Award for outstanding service to the disabled community.

Mike was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and visiting their home in Florida whenever possible. He could always be found reading or getting work done around the house.  Mike always loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He always brought a smile to everyone he met and will be dearly remembered.

Michael leaves behind his wife Cheryl; his two children Michael Alan (Jill) Schlaeger and Susan Marie (Kerry) Connaughty; and two siblings Donna (Ted) Held and John Schlaeger. He also leaves four grandchildren, Anthony Schulter and Angela Schlaeger; and Jaelyn and Avree Connaughty.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Henry and Marilyn Schlaeger and two siblings Patricia (Allen) Falkman and Henry Schlaeger.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday April 10, 2019 at 4:00PM at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 S. Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL. A memorial service will begin at 7:30PM until 8:00PM.

Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on Thursday April 11, 2019 at 11:00AM.
