Charles J. Grimse

July 11, 1994 - July 5, 2019

Charles James Grimse

7/11/1994 – 7/5/2019

Charles was an original. Son, brother, friend, writer, singer, musician, actor. Charles was a spark from day one. He oozed personality. He was dynamic and drew people to him. He was extremely clever. Charles had a love of words that was immeasurable. He had a talent for turning a phrase. He understood the world through words, sounds, and music. His love for books and music began as a baby. Charles loved books. He would sit and look through board book after board book, and was able to read by age 4. One astute middle school teacher called him a “renaissance man with an attitude.” He loved classic rock, spinning vinyl, and all sorts of video games - from pixelated PC games to Nintendo 64 classics to Final Fantasy on the PlayStation. Charles was a proud graduate of BHS and Waubonsee Community College, and attended Milliken University and Columbia College, Chicago. As a student, Charles worked at Barnes and Noble, where he enjoyed his daily interactions with guests and co-workers. Charles was a gift – a gift to all who knew him. He was so loved and will be so missed.

He is survived by his heartbroken friends and family. Parents Amy and James, Brothers Jack (Inga Guliyeva) and Patrick. Grandparents Judith Dye and Len Paplauskas, Victor Dye and Joyce Richards. Aunts and Uncles Alison and Daniel Sylwestrak, Lisa Dye and Steve Kushner, Ralph and Denise Grimse, Mark and Brenda Grimse, Grant and Laura Paplauskas. And by his beloved cousins Stephen Sylwestrak and SonjaMae Langton-Yanowitz, Walker Vance and Hyeji Boo, Brittany Sylwestrak, Phillip Sylwestrak, Ralph and Amanda Grimse, Jennifer and Terry Scherr. Charles is preceded in death by his devoted grandparents Ralph and Virginia Grimse.

  • Ian Hicks Charles was my best friend circa 2000. While I lost contact with Charles after leaving Batavia, Charles reached out on Facebook in high school and several other times throughout college. Despite our relatively short time in each other's lives, I will always treasure my friendship with Charles -- even at age six/seven, Charles was one of the most unique individuals I have had the pleasure of knowing. I am incredibly sad that I will no longer get to see glimpses of the person Charles grew into, and will forever cherish our childhood memories.
  • The Kruse Family Charles, (aka Chucko to my kids) was always the first friend at our house when the boys would come home. He was completely comfortable here and was just like another kid of ours. He always made sure to greet us all when he was here and had a genuine love for all of our kids. The deep conversations around the dinner table or fire pit were always a glimpse inside his brilliant mind. We are sure going to miss his shenanigans, charm, wit and love, and most of all, that deep belly laugh that you could hear 2 floors away. He made such a beautiful difference in all our lives.
  • Dawn Stark It is hard to express in words this tragic loss of life. What, When and Why are all the questions we ask ourselves and of our Lord every day. My deepest sympathies to his parents, brothers, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. The memories and goals of Charles Grimse will be with us all forever now.

  • Megan Kelzer Karim From the moment I met Charles on the first day of Cultural Studies his freshmen year he made an impression. He insisted I called him "Grimse." As a new teacher I told him I have to call him Charles. He said "even at home they call me Grimse." From then on I knew that Grimse would keep me on my toes. He made me a better teacher and I will always be grateful that he was my student. I cannot begin to convey my sadness over his tragic passing. It was truly a privilege to be a small part of his life. But his light will continue to shine in each person he touched.
