Douglas R. Thompson

December 3, 1943 - July 17, 2019

Douglas R. Thompson, 75, of Batavia passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at his home.  He died after a long battle with melanoma cancer. Douglas was born December 3, 1943, in Elmhurst, IL the son of Wayne and Alice (Chelin) Thompson.  He moved to Batavia when he was 5 years old and uniquely had his own mother for a 5th grade teacher.   He graduated Batavia High School in 1961 and then attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.   This is where he met his beautiful wife of 54 years, Nora “Jill” Thompson.   They were united in marriage on July 3, 1965 in Springfield, IL.    Together they moved back to Batavia for Jill to teach 1st grade at McWayne Elementary School and so Doug could finish his college degree at Aurora University.   After graduating in 1967, he taught Special Education for 9 years at Coultrap Middle School in Geneva, IL.  He then continued his teaching career by teaching 6th grade for 1 year and then his dream job of teaching 8th grade American History for 23 years.   Many of those years he spent as Team Leader, mentoring student teachers and inspiring young minds to love history.   Additionally, he coached middle school football and track.  In the later years, you could always find him operating the gym scoreboard at sporting events.  He retired in 2002 after teacher 33 years in the public schools.   He was a member of the Batavia Lions Club and belonged to the Congregational Church of Batavia.

Doug loved to travel, garden, fish and tell stories and jokes.   He had the knack for listening to others and problem solving.   His passion to discuss Chicago Bears Football, Chicago White Sox Baseball, politics, fishing and the stock market where evident until the end.

However, Doug’s biggest pride and joy was his role as a caring father, husband and grandfather.   Doug was a devoted and loving father to Paula, Julie and Amy and his three girls were his pride and joy.   He embraced fatherhood wholeheartedly and enjoyed spending time with his six grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife Jill; three daughters, Paula (Jeff) Isaacson, Julie (Mike) McNamara and Amy Thompson; six grandchildren, Trevor, Cora, Chelin Isaacson, Cassius, Caden and Aracely McNamara; and one sister Ann (Dan) King.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Duane Thompson and nephews, David and Rob.
