Dee K. Freeman

December 31, 1969 - October 13, 2019

Dee K. Freeman, 97, of Batavia, IL formerly of Casa Grande, AZ, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at Wynscape Skilled Nursing Facility in Wheaton, IL.  Dee was born on April 13, 1922 in Wayne, MI, the daughter of Raymond and Stella (nee. Dutkewicz) Kline.  She was united in marriage to Dominic Purpura (1944 – 1981), Lloyd Haskins (1991 – 1998) and Jack Freeman (2010 – 2012).

As one of the oldest of 13 children Dee cared for her siblings from an early age. During the World War II years, she worked in the supply depot at the Selfridge Field Army Base where she met Dominic Purpura and moved to St. Louis, Missouri.  It was here in an Italian-American community that she and Dominic started their family. She learned to cook Italian food from her mother-in-law, Mary. Dee always supported her boys activities, acting as a Cub Scouting den mother and on the sidelines of their sporting events. Dee had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to share a joke with her boys. She became skilled in flower arranging and worked for an interior decorating store. Later Dee moved to Lakeview, OR. There she was the executive assistant and housewares buyer at a large building supply store for many years. After retiring and moving to Casa Grande, AZ, Dee continued working in her later years welcoming residents to her neighborhood and running the front office in her community well into her 80’s. Dee was a lifelong blood donor. Donating many gallons of blood over  the years. Dee cared for her aging siblings on more than one occasion. When they were gone she led a group of her nieces in their monthly social gatherings. They all looked forward to her writing the very humorous minutes after their “Girls Night Out”. Dee loved to read and when she lost her vision at the age of 93, she would listen to over 50 books a year. Dee was blessed with a very sharp mind up until her final weeks of life.

Dee is survived by her five sons, Michael (Maria) Purpura, James (Audrey) Purpura, Joseph (Anne) Purpura, William (Claudia) Purpura and John (Jane) Purpura; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, her two siblings, David Kline and Celine Shaler and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death her parents; her loving husbands, Dominic Purpura, Lloyd Haskins, and Jack Freeman; her five sisters and five brothers.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
