James William Churchill

September 13, 1927 - December 8, 2020

James William “Jim” Churchill, 93, of Saint Charles, IL., formerly of Warrenville, IL., passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, Il.  Jim was born on September 13, 1927 in Chicago, IL., the son of Elmer and Alice (nee. Dean) Churchill.  He was united in marriage to Bernice June Krajecki on November 9, 1946 until her passing on September 14, 1985.  He married Barbara Ann Lemke on December 26, 1992 in St. Charles, IL.

James was a Signalman in the US Navy during WWII where he was aboard a wooden hulled minesweeper in the Pacific Region. After being discharged at the age of 19, he married Bernice. He worked for the railroad and for a short time moved to Southern California where his second child was born.  He returned to Illinois where he and his wife had two more children.  They moved to St. Charles in 1960 and found a community within the local Methodist church and with the local Square Dance enthusiasts. James took advantage of his vacations from work to travel the country with his wife and children while camping in many of our national parks and forests. He taught his children many life skills while seeing different states.

James would take his children to many special seasonal events around the area on the weekend to learn about historical and cultural happenings. The family often had other family friends join us, and our blended families became very close. His children often reminisce about how he provided many opportunities to grow and become better individuals.  He was a strong, calm, quiet giant of a man that never needed to raise his voice to be heard. He loved his grandchildren and would spend as much time as he could with them.

James was a line foreman for Commonwealth Edison for almost thirty-seven years. When he retired, he continued to meet with his former coworkers for coffee. Once he and his second wife Barbara moved to Carriage Oaks in St. Charles, he volunteered to be a member of the board and a driver for special events. Staff and residents alike knew they could depend on “Jim.”

James had the wonderful opportunity to live a long, beautiful marriage to his second wife Barb, and they created a beautiful blended family. Barbara’s children are ever so grateful that God brought Jim into their lives and that he was such an amazing grandpa for their children who love him deeply. James was a devoted husband and, with Barbara, celebrated his wedding anniversary on the 26th of every single month, not just annually. Everyone at Carriage Oaks knew that if they saw Jim, Barbara would be near and if they saw Barbara, Jim would also be somewhere near. They were known by their love.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

James is survived by his loving wife Barbara Ann Churchill.  His three daughters, Kathleen (Jack) Marsh, Julie Churchill, Kimberly Churchill; one son, Jim(Pam) Churchill; his step daughter, Diana (Gary) Broj, his step son, Russell Gudvangen;  his nine grandchildren, Joseph Kuchera, Pamela Kuchera, Elizabeth Kurimjan, Nicholas Churchill, Bethany Broj, Ryan Broj, Luke Broj, Lindsay Gudvangen and Riley (Matt) Valtierra; his three great grandchildren, Joseph Kuchera, James Kuchera and Emma Bueker.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Bernice June Churchill.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Union Cemetery, 1200 N 5th Ave, Saint Charles, IL 60174.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations in James’ name may be made to the Salvation Army Tri-Cities Corp., 1710 S. 7th Ave., St. Charles, IL. 60174
