Clifford V. "Cliff" Anderson

Clifford V. "Cliff" Anderson, 94, a resident of Michealsen Health Care at the Holmstad in Batavia, died peacefully in his sleep on September 18, 2007.Cliff was born April 24, 1913, the son of Victor and Alma Anderson in Batavia. He attended Batavia schools and was on the football team at Batavia High School. Cliff was very active in Boy Scouts. As a charter member of Bethany Lutheran Troop 6, current troop members recently presented Cliff with a plaque at a celebration of the troop's 80th anniversary.After graduation, Cliff joined his father at Anderson Hardware, which he owned or co-owned for over 50 years. In his early years as a businessman, Cliff attended Coyne Institute in Chicago for radio repair after which he opened a radio repair shop and toy store two doors south of the hardware store on South Batavia Avenue.Sports were a big part of Cliff's life. He loved to recollect memories of his play on the Green Pheasants baseball team. He was also an avid fan of the Blackhawks, Bears, Chicago Cardinals, and White Sox. He was an early and active member of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. As a member of the Kane County Board of Supervisors, Cliff voted on issues that helped shape Kane County through the 1960s. He served as a Justice of the Peace, and was elected to six terms as Batavia Township Supervisor from 1961-1985, a position his son, Jim, has held since Cliff's retirement. Cliff was an active lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and served on the church board.Cliff always enjoyed a cup of coffee and the opportunity to discuss sports, politics and local issues with friends at nightly coffee clutches.Cliff was united in marriage to the former Helen Bartelt on September 11, 1937 at the Bethany Lutheran Church parsonage. Cliff and Helen just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a large gathering of family and friends. They built their home in 1948 on a piece of the Bartelt farm property on East Wilson St. When Fermilab was formed in 1968, they repurchased their house from the government and moved it two miles west to Center St. in Batavia.Cliff and Helen were lifelong partners and enjoyed gardening, travel, their beloved church and most important, their children and grandchildren.Cliff is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen, sons Jim and Denny (Linda) of Batavia, Dick (Marilyn) of Riverside CA, and daughter Vicki (Chris) Trimble of Peoria. Grandchildren are Nick and Victor Anderson, Billy and Holli Trimble, Randy Anderson and Lori Gregorski, Richard Anderson and Tami DiPietro and 5 great grandchildren.Burial was private.
