Mary Rita Shallcross

July 18, 1920 - July 6, 2012

Mary Rita Shallcross (nee Atherton) died peacefully Friday, July 6, 2012 at Tower Hill Healthcare Center in South Elgin.  She was born July 18, 1920, in Chicago, the daughter of George and Tecla (Skorcz) Atherton. Formerly of Batavia, St. Charles and Medinah, Mary joined her beloved husband John in heaven less than two weeks before her 92nd birthday.  Besides her husband of 59 years, she is preceded in death by older brother George, and younger siblings James and Joan, and daughter-in-law Barbara (James’ wife).  She is survived by her 11 children:  James; Joseph (Mary); Mary Ann (Jeffry) Nelson; John; Maggie (Kevin) Brewner; Paul (Laura); Terri Teasdale; Peter; Tom (Laura); Geri (David) Kendall; and Rita (Dave) Hill; as well as 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  A devout Catholic, lover of hats and White Sox fan, Mary was well known for her jokes and poetry at both Tower Hill in South Elgin and Heritage Woods in Batavia.  She loved children and served as a pediatric play therapist at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.  Visitation will be from 5-8:00 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 South Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL.  A memorial Mass will be celebrated July 21, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church 2300 Main Street Batavia. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery Geneva.
