Jeanne E. Bernhardt

February 26, 1925 - February 2, 2013

Jeanne E. Bernhardt, 87, of The Holmstad in Batavia, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Michealsen Health Center in Batavia. She was born February 26, 1925 in Chicago, the daughter of Lloyd and Nellie (Racster) Reid.  Jeanne grew up in Maywood, Illinois and was a 1942 graduate of Proviso East High School. Upon her graduation from high school, she attended the University of Illinois in Urbana.  She was united in marriage to Charles A. Bernhardt, Jr. on June 17, 1943 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Her husband died in 1944 while serving in the U.S. Army in Italy.  After the loss of her husband, Jeanne attended night school at the University of Chicago then transferred to Northern Illinois University, where she received her Bachelor Degree of Education in 1948. She received her Masters Degree of Education in 1955 from the University of Illinois. In 1975, she received her Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Relations from Brigham University in Provo, Utah.  As a Home Economics teacher, she taught in the towns of Palmyra and Morris, Illinois, before transferring to Proviso East High School, where she taught school for six years. She completed her teaching career at Proviso West High School, where she taught for 25 years, prior to her retirement in 1983. She served as Department Chairman of the Home Economics Departments for both Proviso East and Proviso West High Schools.  She moved to The Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia in 1988. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints Geneva Ward; American Home Economics Association; Illinois Home Economics Association; Illinois Retired Teachers Association; Illinois Council and Family Living Association; and Textiles, Clothing and Related Arts Forum Association.  She is survived by her son, Frederick A. (Karen) Bernhardt, of Drumheller, Alberta, Canada; seven grandchildren, Tamara L. (John) Grocholl, of Goode, VA, Christopher A. (Ann) Bernhardt, of Taber, Alberta, Canada, Scott A. (Korryn) Bernhardt of Logan, UT, Thomas L. (Audrie) Bernhardt, of Nibley, UT, Laura M. Bernhardt of Chico, CA, Diana G. (Logan) Payne of Coalhurst, Alberta, Canada and Kara J.(Joseph) Atwood, of Hanna, Alberta, Canada; twenty-two great grandchildren; brother, Robert L. (Jean) Reid, of Clarkston, Michigan; two nieces and four nephews.  Visitation will be from 2-4 P.M. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints, 429 Old Kirk Road, Geneva, IL where funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. following the visitation hours. Bishop Kaye C. Brown will officiate. Interment will be in the Flushing Cemetery in Flushing, New York.
